Installing Ductless Mini Split Systems

October 27, 2021

No, we don’t mean a duck-less mini split (why would you want less ducks in any situation)!

In comparison to regular HVAC systems, ductless mini split systems are meant for smaller/individual areas because they have no central air ducts. With a more targeted air flow into individual rooms, it uses less energy and is easier to get to a desired temperature. Moreover, since there’s no need to worry about improperly sealed ducts losing energy, these ductless mini splits run more efficiently and save you money. Since they’re smaller, the hole created in your wall in order to connect the indoor and outdoor systems together would be smaller/less invasive.

If you’re not already convinced, hear this – HVAC systems and heat pumps force air through ductwork, meaning indoor air quality may be affected if the ducts aren’t clean (so if you do have an HVAC system, make sure to schedule for maintenance). For mini splits, there are multiple stages of filtration that reduces the amount of allergens, particles, and dust that enter into your home.

Now, this all sounds pretty neat, but you should consider these factors that a ductless mini split best serves before running to install one:

  • Homes with no ducts
  • Apartments
  • Individual rooms

Any of the above will help make installing a mini split easier and cheaper. It is crucial to accurately gauge the size of the mini split in comparison to the room in order to receive the proper air flow.

Some disadvantages of a ductless mini split include the more expensive pricing and some people might not like the appearance of it. Although less intrusive than a window air conditioner, there does need to be a drain near the unit to condensate the water.
