Should You Purchase a Black Stainless Steel Appliance?

November 24, 2021

So you’ve seen that question posed in the title and probably immediately thought — uh oh, what’s wrong with black stainless steel finishes? They look really nice and sleek in my kitchen though…

Well, the amount of shock you’ll experience depends on how much you care about the look of your appliance. Turns out, a black stainless steel finish is often prone to peeling and chipping. Now, for some people this could look like a cool little surprise when you see that silver stainless steel peeking through (a fashion statement, if you will) but others are not pleased appliances like refrigerators that cost a couple grand are peeling

Part of the perks of a black stainless steel finish is that it’s fingerprint/smudge/smoke-free and aesthetic — however, they’re pricier (about $300 more) and if the aesthetic aspect is ruined because of the peeling, then it might be time to reconsider purchasing appliances with this finish. Not to mention, you’d most likely have to buy all your appliances from the same brand due to the different hues and sheens of black each company produces in their products.

Several customer complaints have been made (especially for Samsung, LG, and Kenmore appliances) once homeowners have discovered their appliances peeling. Some have stated just cleaning with a paper towel had made it start peeling. Unfortunately for these people, this is considered “cosmetic damage” and therefore, not covered by warranty. Even scratches from magnets (yes, you can’t put your cute magnets on there either) aren’t covered by warranty.

For the price of these appliances, you might want to reconsider being led by the aesthetic aspect of it because in the long-run (and quite frankly, the short-run as well) it will not last.
